We all love porridge

Porridge goes great with everything. But how about traditional Taiwanese zi char style porridge? We only discovered Gu Zao Ren Seafood Taiwanese Porridge in ABC Brickworks only after having a very disappointing meal from Yi Sheng Fried Hokkien Mee. We ordered a few dishes and they were absolutely fantastic.

Address: ABC Brickworks, 6 Jalan Bukit Merah #01-143, Singapore 150006

Stir Fried Ginger Sliced Chicken Claypot

We knew the potential of this porridge store when the stir fried ginger chicken was served. It was sizzling hot and its sesame based sauce was extremely aromatic.

While we are glad that the chicken meat used were chicken thigh, the sauce was the main attraction. The sauce was thick, savory and flavorful with a touch of ginger spice. This was easily the best dish and it complements the porridge well.

Minced Meat Egg Omelette

Egg omelettes are common signature dish to the zi char stores in Singapore but we werent really expecting to see a pancake-like dish.

We were genuinely surprised when served as it looked more like a pancake than a egg omelette.

It was smooth, fluffy and had a nice crispy exterior but it is slightly oily. It would have been too greasy with rice, but since we were having porridge, it was perfect.

Lemon Chicken Cutlet

We are not really fans of lemon chicken cutlet, but we ordered it anyway. The batter was soft and crispy and the meat was extremely tender. We made a mental note to try other variations of the chicken cutlets for our next visit.

Stir Fried Beef with Gai Lan

We had high expectations for the stir fried beef with gai lan and it didnt fail us. Aside from the fresh crunchy gai lan, you can taste the wok-hey flavor and its tender beef slices. It was definitely one of the better versions we had in a while.

Free Flow Porridge

Gu Zao Ren Seafood Taiwanese Porridge offers unlimited bowls of porridge that come with bit and pieces of sweet potatoes, so feel free to eat as many bowls of porridge as you want. Considering this as a zi char store, the total bill for these four dishes added up to S$34 which wasn’t too expensive.
